Abstract:
Men’s suit, derived from the three-piece suit of british menswear in England, is the most formal and common of men’s clothing in the world. To explore the cause of the suit becoming the most popular and the most formal clothing for men in the world, this paper conducts analysis from the perspective of sociology. Firstly, it expounds that the suit originated from the British King Charles II in 1666, and its essence is to replace the conspicuous consumption with the inconspicuous consumption mode to achieve the purpose of political legitimacy; secondly, citing the concept of "great masculine renunciation ", the values of social equality embodied in the suit and the gender differences between men and women is analyzed; thirdly, from the perspective of hegemonic masculinity, this paper clarifies the moral responsibility symbolized by men wearing suits. According to the study, the basic characteristic of masculinity that suits impart is the stable anchor that perpetuates the suits to this day. The research provides a cultural reference for men who wear suits.
